Important Update on Sequoia

Note: Sequoia is no longer actively developed or supported by Continuent. Our main open source project is Continuent Tungsten. Our currently active open source projects are: Tungsten Replicator, Tungsten SQL Router, Tungsten Connector, Tungsten Manager and Tungsten Monitor. All these components are available on SourgeForge.

Continuent Tungsten offers advanced replication solution with advanced cluster management and intelligent load-balancing. Continuent Tungsten offers a wealth of solutions for MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle users, providing the following key features:

  • Automatic Failover with Automatic Slave Promotion
  • Autonomic Cluster Management
  • High Performance Parallel Replication
  • Application Scaling with Intelligent SQL Routing
  • 100% Data Protection with DRBD integration
  • Built-in Back-up Integration
  • Disaster Recovery over WAN
  • Consistency Checks and Flush Operations to Protect Data
  • Heterogeneous Database Replication
  • Data Integration with Multi-database Support
  • Bi-Directional Replication for Multi-site Clustering
  • Database Sharding Support

Note: Sequoia is no longer actively developed or supported by Continuent. Please consider Continuent Tungsten as an alternative.

Sequoia is a middleware solution offering clustering, load balancing and failover services for any JDBC database. The database is distributed and replicated over multiple nodes and Sequoia balances the queries between them. Sequoia handles node and network failures transparently. It also provides support for hot recovery, online maintenance operations and online upgrades.

Sequoia offers a multi-master approach for replication. This is a very attractive model because it offers high-availability and load-balancing with 100% consistent reads.  Sequoia offers performance benefits for applications that have resource-intensive read operations.  Sequoia can also provide HA for applications by maintaining multiple copies of data.

It is important to understand that Sequoia has a number of trade-offs that limit its usefulness because of the performance impact and lack of application transparency. Tungsten processes updates more quickly, handles a wider range of SQL, works over a WAN, and permits direct database access without proxies.

If your application has any of these requirements, we strongly encourage you to consider Continuent Tungsten.

In the past, Continuent has offered Sequoia-based Continuent uni/cluster solutions for MySQL and PostgreSQL, but this product line has reached its end of life. We no longer sell Continuent uni/cluster.
